"Heathens"
A collaboration between myself and Lazaria "Lala" Roseboro. We've scripted, storyboarded and fully animated it in the span of our last semester of University.

Artists' statement:
Mixed Media Animation
Cults use subversive tactics and stalking behaviors in order to get more recruits. Though the best recruitment method is to indoctrinate their children, most cults still wish to get as many outsiders as they can, offering awards to members who get a large number to join. Cults target insecurities and claim to have an answer to all questions. Their words sneak into your safest place and disorient your judgement until you question the beliefs you were so sure of. Despite logic you start questioning yourself and the words they keep repeating sink into your skull. Suddenly, you see the horns that you swear weren’t there before, and you begin to fear who you are.
By using color and distortion of video and sound this film explores the sense of suffocation, hopelessness and chaos that indoctrination brings to targets of cult harassment. Both artists have experienced these tactics, but as someone who has grown in an environment heavily dictated by religion, Lazaria has seen firsthand many of these techniques in practice. Hugo and Lala balance their experiences in this work with Lazaria’s insider’s perspective and Hugo’s exposure to their tactics of stalking and violation of privacy.
